Discussions

There are two types of Discussions in this module: reflection discussions and video clip discussions

Reflection discussions

Read each question, then click the link below the link below the question to post your response. In order to earn full points for each question, you must also post a thoughtful response to one of your classmates' posts.

  1. What are some “friendship rules” that you share with others? Have you ever engaged in a conflict with a friend because you or your friend broke a friendship rule? Describe the rule that was broken, what behavior was enacted, and how the subsequent conflict was resolved.

Post your answer and replies for question 1 here.

  2. Is couple violence more acceptable than domestic violence because it is not premeditated and not based on power? Is it ever appropriate to slap or push a partner as a way to express heightened emotional arousal?

Post your answer and replies for question 2 here.

  3. Sociolinguist Deborah Tannen suggests that the United States can be described in terms of a warlike atmosphere of unrelenting contention. How does U.S. culture implicitly support this warlike atmosphere [e.g., government policy - the “war” on poverty and the “war” on drugs; the names we give to high school and college football teams – the Williams H.S. “Warriors” and the “Fighting” Illini; television commercials – “fight” soap scum and “fight” high blood pressure]?

Post your answer and replies for question 3 here.

  4. Can you describe some talk shows on which the host and guests interrupt each other and argue loudly?  Can you describe some reality shows in which uncivil behavior and personal attacks are celebrated?  Do you think these shows influence us to communicate in an uncivil manner?

Post your answer and replies for question 3 here.

Video clip discussions
